Quest for Excellence

Max Lucado writes in The Applause of Heaven that the push for power has come to shove. And most of us are either pushing or being pushed. His entry is entitled “A Passion for Excellence”, and he points out the difference between a passion for excellence and a passion for power. The desire for excellence is a gift of God, much needed in a society. It is characterized by respect for quality and a yearning to use God’s gifts in a way that pleases Him. But there is a canyon of difference between doing your best to glorify God and doing whatever it takes to glorify yourself. The quest for excellence is a mark of maturity. The quest for power is childish.

Ephesian 2:10:
In Christ Jesus, God made us to do good works, which God planned in advance for us to live our lives doing.

A point I might add here is that excellence is not perfection. There is only one who is perfect, God. Excellence is doing our best for others, for our jobs, for our families, for the environment. The world today could use some more excellence and a lot less power. How will you use your God given gifts to excellence in your life? If you haven’t, start now. It is never too late for you or for God.

Join us for worship on Sunday at 10:45. Come as you are. This Sunday, November 24th is the end of the church calendar, Christ the King Sunday. Then comes Advent as we prepare for the birth of Jesus. We will also have an adult Sunday School offering the first Sunday in December at 9:45 to study the Songs of Advent. Come join us.

Be a Blessing this week, Deacon Nancy Trimble
