Fear Not

In The Applause of Heaven, Max Lucado shares this passage from Isaiah.

I am the Lord your God who holds your right hand, and I tell you, ‘Don’t be afraid. I will help you. Isaiah 41:13

Could you use more courage? Are you backing down more than you are standing up? Jesus scattered the butterflies out of the stomachs of his nervous disciples. We need to remember that the disciples were common men given a compelling task. Before there were stained glass windows in cathedrals, the disciples were somebody’s next door neighbors trying to make a living and raise a family. They were not cut from theological cloth or raised on supernatural milk. But they were an ounce more devoted than they were afraid and as a result did some extraordinary things. Earthly fears are no fears at all. Answer the big question of eternity and the little questions of life fall into perspective.

As we continue in the Easter season, we hear the stories of the disciples and now apostles sent out by Jesus. Jesus did prepare them and helped them, but they still were somewhat fearful and bewildered. Isn’t that the way we feel right now? Fear, bewilderment, the future, how we are going to get through the day. But many of you disciples have already started out in the world: taking care of people, shopping for groceries for someone, making masks, calling your neighbors, praying, and so on. The power to over come fear in the disciples in Jesus day was the Holy Spirit descending on them as it does for us in baptism. So, do not fear. God holds your right hand and will help you. Are you listening?

Dearest God, we are like the disciples of old, needing your help and knowing you walk with us. Please continue to hold us up through these uncertain and fearful times. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen
